A very well conducted study by a major university medical school demonstrated that talking on the phone while driving, hands free or not, makes you just as impaired as drinking and driving.
It is not the same as conversing with a passenger in the car because a passenger will actually modulate the conversation according to what is happening in and around the vehicle. The person on the other end of the phone cannot do this.
It's been documented that it is not safe to talk on the phone while driving. Now we have people texting while driving. Have to admit I have done it. Also have to admit it does make a difference.
Can you imagine if everyone really did pull over to talk?
